Taking time off from what you love is crushing. After 6 months of skating, my shin splints have woken up and taken charge. The drills that once felt incredible (and exhausting) are now downright painful. Time to take a break. A few weeks of rehab on the shins should make a world of difference. While I’ll be working on lengthing my calf muscles -built up from years of dance- and strengthening my shin muscles, my team will be kicking ass and taking names.
We are always recruiting new skaters both women’s and men’s. Anyone interested in trying roller derby or getting involved as a ref should come to one of our many practices.
Sundays 7:00 – 9:00pm @ Skater’s Edge in Appleton
Tuesdays 6:30 – 8:30pm @ Skater’s Edge in Appleton
Wednesdays 6:30 – 8:30pm @ National Guard Armory in Green Bay
Thursdays 6:30 – 8:30pm @ Skater’s Edge in Appleton
Wednesday practices are actually for the local men’s derby team, the Green Bay Smackers. The Green Bay Smackers are Paper Valley Roller Girls’ brother team, and they are led by PVRG’s head coach Attractive Nusiance. The Smackers invited us to train with them at the Green Bay location, which is great for those of us from GB. Practicing in Green Bay encourages more GB natives to come try out the sport in a city which currently does not have a woman’s roller derby team.
This past Wednesday, I took my camera along as I am not skating (temporarily). It was a much smaller group than usual, but they practiced hard.
