I’m a total nut for doing this, but I love reading posts that dig into someone’s bookbag, purse, or makeup bag. What you carry around with you is surprisingly telling of who you are (or who you want to be). There have been tons of posts floating through the interwebs on this topic: see here, here, and here. My turn.
I’d like to say I’m a laid-back basics kind of girl, but that’s a lie. In reality, my makeup is an all or nothing effort. 5 day/week consist of zero makeup whatsoever. The other 2 days, I like to take my time and spend at least 30 mins playing with it. For me, makeup is art and a time to slow down and enjoy the process.
Just the Basics are carried around in my everyday bag: Dove Deep Moisture facial lotion, Nars Laguna bronzer, Nars Orgasm blush, Revlon Colorburst 020 Papaya lip gloss, pixi No. 14 Bittersweet Cacao eyeshadow kit, Tweezerman bronze eyelash curler, laura mercier Blush Ivory oil free foundation, L’Oreal Telescopic waterproof black/brown liquid eyeliner, stila travel palette no. 1 eyeshadow kit, Make Up For Ever Professional #1 concealer, Bare Escentuals Buxom black mascara, Kiehl’s Creme de Corps, Bare Escentuals blush brush, sonia kashuk slant eyeliner brush, Sephora Professional dome shadow brush, & sonia kashuk eyeshadow brush.
Lotion: Kiehl’s Creme de Corps
Eczema and dry skin have been a major issue of mine since birth. It’s a challenge to find a body lotion that can ease the itch and annoyance of flaky skin – especially one that isn’t nauseating à la department stores and bath & body works. Superhero Kiehls comes to the rescue. As far as beauty products go, I love this above all else, and it would definitely be on my list of “stranded on a deserted island…”
Mascara: Bare Escentuals Buxom Lash Mascara
I move through favorite mascaras about once a year. I’ll find something j’adore et puis… 6months later I’ll purchase its replacement and find it less than satisfactory. Currently, I’m using Buxom. This was incredible the first time around – making my short, blond lashes look long and voluptuous (is that an appropriate word for lashes?). However, when I started to run out, I bought the same one in both black and blue and both were kinda ‘eh’. Wtf? UPDATE: Oh nevermind! It’s this crazy thing called temperature. During the cold months, my mascaras suck. During the warm months, they rock my lashes off. Back to loving this stuff. I used to think it’s magic was all in the brush, but after trying Brandy’s favorite Voluminous Millions Lashes which has an almost identical brush… it’s also the potion itself. Sorry Brandy, I just can’t get past your L’Oreal version’s odd smell. I’ll fork over the extra $10 every 6months for this stuff.
Perfume: Falling in Love by Philosophy
Back in high school I learned that wearing perfume is a girl society must. Nearly all of my girl friends could identify a perfume or colonge the moment someone walked by. Granted, I’m sure the students at my school stuck to a usual 10 or so (less to memorize you olfactory wizards?), but smells were just smells to me. I never wore perfume at that time because my mother is extremely sensitive to any major scents. When I got to college & moved out of the house, I charged through the perfume aisles intent on finding something nice. Everything was too strong, too flowery, too musky until Falling in Love by Philosophy. It’s a perfect mix of vanilla (sans frosting) and fruit (sans tropics).
Blush & Bronzer: Nars Orgasm & Nars Laguna
It was the magazines that sold me on Nars Orgasm blush. Je sais! But when the 20th mag in a row states that it works on everyone, you start to wonder. Yes. It does. Perfectly. As for Nars Laguna, my college roommate Carolyn turned me on to this stuff a few years ago. With epicly death pale skin, I never thought a bronzer would work on me. She showed me how to use it, and I’ve been pairing it with my blush ever since. Just a dusting prevents my face from whiteing out the cameras. Awesome.
Concealer: Make Up For Ever Professional #1
As ‘Fairest of Them All’ a concealer is a MUST. The dark circles under my eyes are pretty much permanent. They aren’t punched-in-the-eye worthy but pretty close. Make Up For Ever is the first brand I’ve found that doesn’t just magically melt off my face in the first hour of the day. I love this brand for all things sport related as well – they were there when I desperately required roller derby makeup that wouldn’t stream off during the first jam. Awesome. Added bonus: This is one of the few concealers whose lightest color actually matches my skin rather than trying to tan it.
